Step 2 – Comparison ShopComparison shopping is a great idea when looking for a workshop exhaust fan. Use online websites and check manufacturer specials or promotions. Depending on the type of fan you choose, and your own skill levels, you may decide to hire a contractor to install an exhaust fan. Step 3 – LocationProper exhaust fan operation requires correct installation, especially when you are using a high –end unit that will be secured on a wall or in a ceiling. Ceiling fans are good choices when there is a great deal of height in the structure where it is to be installed. Wall units are great for low-ceiling areas. Determine what works best for your needs depending on the size of your room. Step 4 – Safety FirstBefore mounting and wiring your garage exhaust fan, turn off all circuit breakers to prevent any electrical accidents during installation. Remove any insulation in either the ceiling or wall area where the fan will be installed to prevent any fire from happening.Step 5 – Mounting the FanWhen using a wall fan, make sure the wall cut does not compromise the structure stability. If possible, make use of existing wall studs by install a housing frame – a simple square wood box – that is sturdy enough to handle the weight when attaching the fan. When installing the fan in the ceiling, try to secure it directly to a ceiling beam. If that is not possible, install wooden braces between joists to allow firm attachment for the housing. When making the cut, hold the housing frame firmly against the wall or ceiling area and mark its perimeter carefully. Puncture each corner marked and make sure the cut lines are straight between the punctures before cutting. Once you have the hole, place the housing firmly in the opening. Make all necessary seals to ensure a tight and weatherproof fit.Step 6 – Wire the FanInsert a metal clip on the fan housing to accept an electrical ground. Use only manufacturer approved wiring to connect the fan to a power source. It is highly recommended to run fan wiring to its own independent circuit breaker and not share a direct current source. Make sure to run an on/off wiring set up even if you plan continuous fan operation.

Would an insulated garage door help keep the garage cooler, or is there a way to vent the garage to remove some of the hot air? I have a roll-down screen, but in the summer it does not seem to offer much relief from the heat. Jan McM., Largo FL

If you were to install an insulated garage door and close it, you would trap this heat inside the garage where you do not want it. An insulated garage door may be a great idea for other times of year, it just becomes problematic in the summer months.

You are correct that bringing a hot car into an insulated garage will just keep it hot in there. The brake rotors you note as a major heat source cool a lot faster than the radiator, exhaust & engine do. But if Jan leaves the car out until after dark when it cools down (to the high 70s/low 80s here) before bringing it in, it will be a much improved situation. And, the insulated garage door will do its job in the afternoon sun. That alone should lower the in-garage temperature about 15 degrees in the circumstances described.”

To test the controller, without the door switches attached, connect a wire across the GarageVent™ screw terminals for at least 10 seconds and then release. The fan should turn on for the set DELAY time.

Insulated doors are excellent if you’re in a cold climate and wanting to preserve car heat in the winter months. If you live in parts of the deep southern USA, Florida or the southwest where it rarely gets cold, I don’t know if I’d get one if I wanted a cooler garage.

But keep in mind they will rarely, if ever, be able to drop the temperature lower than the outdoor temperature. This means if it is 90F outdoors at 5 or 6 p.m., it will probably be in the upper 90’s F inside the garage.
